Lions to host plenty of playoff teams in 2010

By Bud L. Ellis

At least the Detroit Lions aren’t coming into 2010 after a winless season.

The Lions, who went 0-16 in 2008, found a way into the win column twice in 2009. The Lions’ 2010 schedule has been released by NFL – dates will be announced later.

As usual, the Lions will play host to a Thanksgiving game at Ford Field. It will be a playoff team from the AFC, either the New York Jets (who reached the AFC championship game) or the New England Patriots (the AFC East champion).

The tough part of the schedule likes at home – five of the eight teams visiting Detroit this season qualified for the playoffs. Along with the Jets and Patriots, Detroit plays host to playoff teams Philadelphia, Green Bay, and NFC runner-up Minnesota. Chicago comes calling, as do two teams that really struggled in 2009: Washington (4-12) and St. Louis (1-15).

Road games against playoff teams Minnesota, Green Bay and Dallas highlight the road schedule. The Lions also will visit Chicago, the New York Giants, Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Miami. Six of the eight road games are against teams that won seven or more games last season.

The Lions’ schedule is ranked tied for 12th, based on opponents’ 2009 win percentage.
